Dr. Lulu Fleming
Missionary Story

Lulu Fleming began her life in slavery and was often treated as though she had no true value or potential. But God had awesome plans for Lulu. After she was released from enslavement, while pursuing an education, she learned the best news ever. God made her! God loved her! Jesus died for her sin! Lulu was thrilled to know Jesus as her Savior, and wanted all people to know that a loving God had made them for his glory and sent his Son to save them from sin. She became a missionary and dedicated her life to sharing the love and truth of Jesus in the heart of Africa. When severe illness forced her to return to the USA, she made history by enrolling in medical school and becoming the very first Black woman to be commissioned as a missionary doctor. Dr. Lulu Fleming returned to the mission field with a zeal for healing people’s bodies and souls in the name of Jesus. For the rest of her life, she stood up against cruelty and oppression as she gently shared the gospel message of healing and hope with those who had never heard.

Big Idea: God made all people to glorify him!

Memory Verse: Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him…”

Story Excerpt: At last, when she was 15 years old, Lulu was able to attend school! What’s your favorite part of school? Some children don’t like school, but Lulu was overjoyed to have the opportunity to learn more. She especially enjoyed learning about Jesus. She learned that God created mankind in his image. Her brown skin was Jesus’ beautiful creation. He loved her, and chose every detail about her! She heard about the problem of her sin and how it separated her from her Creator. Then, she heard about how Jesus, who is God, came into the world as a perfect man, died for her sin, and then didn’t stay dead, but rose from the dead. Lulu learned that the Bible said that if she trusted in Jesus, he would take away her sin and she would belong to him forever. Lulu thought that was the best news she’d ever heard and she believed in Jesus to be her Savior and King forever!

After Lulu believed in Jesus, she wanted everyone to know about what he’d done for her. She wanted everyone to know about Jesus’ love and how he created each person in his image. She described how she felt in a letter years later. “…I entered into the blessed light of His love…I was a missionary….” A missionary is a Christian with the job of helping people learn about Jesus. That’s what Lulu wanted to be! She started in her own community… But Lulu couldn’t stop thinking of Africa, the place where her grandfather had been born and raised before he was stolen and enslaved. Many people in Africa had never heard about Jesus and didn’t know God loved them. Many missionaries who worked in Africa wrote letters about the serious illnesses that people suffered from. Foreign governments had taken control of many countries in Africa and they treated the people horribly. There was fighting, poverty, and so much suffering. Lulu wanted to share the hope of Jesus with them and help in any way she could. After praying and talking to friends and family, Lulu believed that being a missionary to Africa was what God wanted her to do. But how would she do it?
