Margaret Brand – Sight in the Darkness
Margaret Brand Missionary Story
The missionary story of Dr. Margaret Brand will help kids see how Jesus helps people to shine God’s light in the darkness. Margaret Brand was a wife, mother of six, educator, missionary, doctor, but above all, a follower of Jesus. She was catapulted into ophthalmology, which led her to make significant discoveries about the effect of Hansen’s disease (leprosy) on the eye, and how to prevent damage and preserve sight. Hansen’s disease left many people around the world surrounded by the darkness of isolation, stigma, loss, and death. Margaret Brand’s willingness to be used by God brought sight and light to thousands in physical and spiritual darkness.

Big Idea: Jesus helps me shine God’s light!
Key Verse: Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Story Excerpt: Dr. Margaret watched as the small group of men stood outside the camp. No one wanted to go near them or help them because they had a disease called leprosy. Dr. Margaret could see they were blind and needed help so she went to them. She could never have imagined how much meeting these blind men with leprosy would change her life, or the lives of thousands of other people, forever.
