Althea Edmiston
Missionary Story
This missionary story for children tells the true story of Althea Brown Edmiston and how Jesus used her life to do extraordinary work for his glory. As she braved poverty and prejudice to pursue her education during America’s Reconstruction era, Althea Brown Edmiston was introduced to Jesus, and he changed her life forever. Althea followed Jesus into the heart of Africa, where she spent her life serving as a missionary among the Bakuba people of the Congo. Despite having no formal linguistics training, she produced a grammar and dictionary of their unwritten language to help them to learn to read, write, and study God’s Word in their own tongue. Throughout her life, she joyfully devoted herself to difficult and arduous tasks so that she might play a role in God’s grand work of bringing the gospel to all nations.

Big Idea: Jesus helps me work for him!
Memory Verse: Philippians 2:13 “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
Story Excerpt: After years of preparing to be a missionary, Althea Brown Edmiston finally reached her mission station in the Congo. The mission station was like a small village where the missionaries lived as they did their work. The people who lived in the area, the Bakuba tribe, frequently came to the mission station for help and to learn. Althea was excited to meet them and begin telling them about Jesus, but first she had to learn their language. She spent time with the Bakuba people every day studying their language and their way of life. It was hard work. There was no Bakuba dictionary to tell her what words meant or how to say them – in fact, there were no books at all! But that didn’t stop Althea, it gave her an idea! “I will make a Bakuba dictionary that will help missionaries learn to speak this language. It will also help the Bakuba people learn to read God’s Word!”
Althea started on her project right away, but it took a long time. She had a lot of other missionary work at the mission station that kept her busy and the Bakuba language was very challenging to learn. Sometimes she would have to spend weeks trying to figure out parts of it. One time, she became very confused with a question about the language for a long, long time. It was one of the hardest problems she’d ever had with it. “Lord, please help me understand this,” she prayed. One day as she was sitting on her porch, a three-year-old boy came crawling up her steps and said some Bakuba words that suddenly helped it all makes sense. Althea rejoiced! She never would have imagined Jesus would use a toddler to give her the answer! She prayed for his help with other big challenges the missionaries had too. What would he do next?
