Teach Us to Pray!

Jesus is the master teacher! When he was on earth, he told his disciples (and us) the things we need to know, including the basics of how to pray.  In this six-part series, children will memorize the Lord’s Prayer and learn about Bible characters who lived out the truths contained in each phrase of this model prayer Jesus gave to his disciples. Each lesson includes a memory verse, coloring page, Bible lesson, prayer time, game ideas, and part of a missionary story about Dr. Bob Foster, a man who knew and lived the power of prayer!

These lessons are easily adaptable for various teaching situations with each of the six lessons containing enough content for about 90 minutes of interactive teaching time. There is also easily enough material in these six lessons to spread out the content and use it for six weeks of family devotions. In addition to the 40+ printable visuals and 80+ PPT slides included with this download, we have also prepared a song video on YouTube that can be used to help children learn the Lord’s Prayer.

Lesson Overviews

Lesson 1: Jesus is the master teacher! When he was on earth, he told his disciples (and us) the things we need to know, including the basics of how to pray. How kind of Jesus to show us how to pray to the Father! In the first lesson of this six-part series, children will be introduced to the Lord’s Prayer and learn that they can pray, some of the basics of what prayer is, and how to start praying.

Lesson 2: Jesus not only taught us to pray, he perfectly modeled it as well. In the Garden of Gethsemane, on the brink of his betrayal, arrest, and brutal crucifixion, Christ prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.” In this lesson children will be encouraged to follow Jesus’ example of praying for God’s will to be done.

Lesson 3: We all have many different needs on a daily, hourly, and sometimes minute-by-minute, basis. It’s so good to know that we can come to our King with all of our needs. Not only will he never turn us away, he gives us himself and provides for what we need according to his wisdom and grace. This lesson uses the prayers of Nehemiah to help children learn how to bring their requests to God.

Lesson 4: Our sin held us captive under the weight of a debt we could never hope to repay on our own. Praise God that Jesus paid it all! Because of Jesus, we have been forgiven and we can forgive others. In this lesson, children will learn about praying with a heart of gratitude and forgiveness as they talk with God about both their own sin and the sin of others.

Lesson 5: Needing help is such a big part of the human experience. We want to be self-sufficient, but sometimes are humbled into needing to ask for help. Which is exactly where our King wants us to be. He is there, ready and willing to help us and deliver us from the evil one. In this lesson children will hear the story of Daniel being delivered from the lions’ den as they learn to trust the King’s help in the battle of good vs. evil.

Lesson 6: God is worthy of worship from all people, in all places, and at all times! In this lesson, children will learn what worship is and be challenged to worship God for themselves by examining the prayers and praises of saints throughout the Bible. As you teach children why and how to worship God in their prayers, you can help them begin to put it into practice by praying together as they worship God in their own words.
