“If God is everywhere, what happens if he gets run over by a car in the parking lot?” This is just one of many questions I’ve been asked by kids as they try to digest the staggering truth that God is here, there, and everywhere at all times. Our human minds are baffled by such a marvelous claim, but it’s something God reveals to us in Scripture. I enjoy teaching kids this awesome truth about God and sharing the hope and comfort this attribute of God brings as we grow to know Jesus more. I’d like to share some ideas and object lessons that I’ve used to teach kids about the omnipresence of God. Here are some simple ways to use Scripture to teach kids about the omnipresence of God.
God is Omnipresent – Object Lesson
Do: Show pictures or toys of fast things (trains, motorcycles, racecars, jets, spaceships, etc.)
Say: Can you guess what the fastest thing people have ever made is? It’s way faster than a racecar or a jet. It’s an unmanned spacecraft that scientists designed to study the sun. It’s about 1,000 times faster than a racecar! But even though it’s super fast, it still can’t be in two places at once. It can’t be here on earth and up in outer space at the same time. But God can. God can be everywhere at once, not because he’s super fast, but because he’s omnipresent. Omni means “always” and present means “to be somewhere.” This means God is always present everywhere. He is in all places at all times. Let’s point all around us while we say, “God is omnipresent!” together.
Do: Visualize the definition by writing it on a whiteboard (or using the poster or PPT from our free lesson…hint! hint!) and have children repeat the attribute’s meaning after you several times while doing the motion of rapidly pointing all around them.
Say: God doesn’t have to rush back and forth to be everywhere. He is always everywhere. That means he’s able to always be with me while he’s also always able to be with you! No matter where you you go, God is always there too. He never leaves you alone. He’s always there to hear when you pray or sing. Your omnipresent God is always with you and wants you to be with him forever. That’s why Jesus died and rose again! If you trust Jesus to save you from sin, he rescues you from sin and gives you eternal life with God. This means God will always be with you, and you will live with him forever in his perfect home someday! You can trust that your omnipresent God will never leave you.
God is Omnipresent – Memory Verse
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5b
Say: Who are some people who are with you a lot? Your parents, siblings, friends, and others who are close to you. Where are they with you? They may be with you a lot, but none of them can be with you all the time. Only Jesus can be with you all the time because he is omnipresent. That means he is always present in all places!
Do: Read Hebrews 13:5 from the Bible with the children. (There’s also a free PPT slide and printable visual for it in our free lesson to help you visualize it.) Explain that it means God will never leave you, turn away from you, or abandon you. Talk about some of the many places God is with you, and encourage children to say this verse to themselves whenever they feel upset, anxious, or alone. Help them begin to learn the verse in a fun way by pretending to travel around the world in airplanes, boats, cars, trains, and on horseback while you say the verse together. Remind them God never has to travel anywhere. He is already there and he will never leave us alone. He is omnipresent!
Build Bible skills and reinforce the truth that God is omnipresent by helping the children use their own Bibles to also find and read other key verses like Zephaniah 3:17, Romans 8:38-39, and Isaiah 66:1. (Older children may enjoy doing “Bible drills” by racing to find each verse.)
God is Omnipresent – Scripture Reading
Read Matthew 28:1-10 as children act out the resurrection of Jesus. Read Matthew 28:16-20 and have children listen for when and where Jesus said he would be with his disciples. Explain that Jesus promised to always be with Christians as we go to all the nations of the world (everywhere) with the gospel. Help the children find Israel on a globe or world map and then help them find your own country/state on the map and explain that Jesus was with every Christian throughout all time who worked to bring the gospel from Israel to you. He is always in all places at all times!
God is Omnipresent – Discussion Questions
Use these questions with a simple game to reinforce and review the truths in this lesson. Set two toy cars on a table. Have two children answer a question, then let them each roll a car to see who can get theirs closest to the table edge without going over. Whoever gets the closest wins that round. Emphasize that God is with us everywhere we go.
- What does it mean that God is omnipresent? (God is always present everywhere. He is in all places at all times.)
- Where can God be all at the same time? (With me, with you, across the world, in every galaxy, deep in the ocean, etc.)
- Where are some places that God was with people in the Bible? (Answers may include in the Ark, the fiery furnace, the den of lions, the desert, battlefields, cities, on mountains, a whale’s belly, on boats, in Heaven, etc.)
- How does God’s omnipresence comfort you? (God is always with you no matter where you are, God sees everything happening to you. God is with the people you love even when you’re not with them.)
God is Omnipresent – Activity
Look at a globe or map with the children. Say the name of a country and have the children race to find it on the map. Once they find it, remind them God is already present in that place and say, “God is in (country’s name)!” together. Name another country and play again. For younger children, say a color and have them point at a country that is that color on the map. Read the nation’s name for them and remind them God is already present in that country. He is everywhere! Pray and thank God for always being with you everywhere you go. He is omnipresent!
There’s a free coloring page in our free lesson kit that you can use after you’ve finished sharing these other ideas. Provide art supplies and have children decorate the coloring page while you talk about what they learned. Remind them of how the picture relates to the lesson. If desired, serve a small snack for the children to enjoy as you talk and color.
